NO. 424 - VAN DE STADT 40 "NORMAN"

The CARIBBEAN and NORMAN twins are the answer to the demand for comfortable sea-going sailing yachts. The most modern constructions and design vision is embodied in these twins. It results in strong, robust and fast ships. The construction conforms to Lloyd's Register standards. Both designs can be built according to the most modern building methods. That saves a tremendous amount of time and money and eliminates faults. Even computer-controlled plasma-cut steel and aluminium plate packages are available. The plans for the round bilge versions are delivered with frame, deck and stem drawings to full scale on stretch-free mylar film. One or two couples can live aboard for years and see the world.
Particularly if you want to make long crossings, a fast sailer is ideal. Because lengthy crossings don't need to be endlessly long and eventually give rise to tiredness and irritation.
Finally, there is less need to revert to the engine. The twins are identical in hull, keel, rudder and rig. The difference is in the layout and the superstructure.
The CARIBBEAN has a large open cockpit where, if desired, a partly fold-away deck tent with fixed spray hood can offer extra protection. The NORMAN has a deck saloon and a smaller cockpit. The sailing characteristics of both twins are practically alike. Due to the higher roof and a little more weight, the NORMAN will likely cover a few miles less per 24 hours. Yachts of this length can, of course, be fitted out entirely to personal preference. Here are a few examples:
The interior comprises two or three spacious cabins and a saloon of 3.50 x 3.50 metres. It goes without saying that toilet area with shower, galley and chart table are also largely dimensioned.

The superstructure enables plenty of light to enter the saloon. How do you make a motor-sailer that doesn't look like one and behaves like a real sailing ship? The answer is the NORMAN.
The deck saloon is graceful and completely in harmony with the lines of a sailing ship. The spacious saloon provides good vision and has a comfortable round seat. By the application of modern materials it is possible, without heavy constructions, to create large windows capable of withstanding heavy seas. Here also layout variations with two or three comfortable cabins are projected. The special shower unit saves much space.
Both ships have an engine room in which accessories can also be placed, such as a generator, boiler, etc. We advise an engine power of 50 HP, but a more powerful engine is no problem. Furthermore, NORMAN has a larger fuel tank and water tank than CARIBBEAN. Those wishing to sail for the rest of this century with a modern, comfortable yacht, will choose one of these twins. For the choice of building method, rig and keel, see our remarks in the Van de Stadt catalogue.
